First and foremost, I would only recommend going to this arch if you have an SUV (minimum) and are comfortable on dirt roads. There isn’t any crazy rock crawling involved, but road maintenance isn’t perfect and could be rough on a car.

That said, this may be one of my favorite arches for its location and size. Because of the difficulty just getting to it, there aren’t a lot of visitors (there is still parking and a bathroom so you’re safe before starting), making it very secluded and more personal. The hike there is about 1.3 miles, but changes very little in elevation, I believe I saw just under 300’ on my watch.

The hike there takes you past Marching Men and just this wall of gorgeous sandstone! Hiking evening-ish time really gave us a beautiful coloring and some really spectacular views! After coming around the bend at Marching Men you traverse one of the many “fins” you see all over Devils Playground and then you come face to face with an enormous arch and some towering pillars of sandstone (which definitely explains the name).

Our party found ample amounts of shade to rest in and plenty of sites to take in. For anyone marking off arches on their bucket list- definitely make this one a priority!

This is a great moderate hike (5.2 miles round trip), after traveling a number of miles on the Salt Valley Road. It’s a gravel road that is passable with most sedans. There is a parking lot that could handle 8-10 vehicles.

The steepest part of the trail is when you’re leaving the parking lot. You should follow the cairns so you don’t get lost. About a mile into the hike, look for the sandy uphill leading to the right that will bring you to a narrow part of the trail. At the top of the sandy portion of the trail, look to your left and you’ll see the marching men.

After the Tower Arch, head up the narrow canyon to see more interesting views and rock formations.

We were there late in the day, so we only saw 2 groups of 2 heading back to the parking lot, so we had most of the hike to ourselves. The sun low in the sky that made for wonderful photos of the rock walls, formations and vegetation.

This hike, within Arches NP is approximately 7.8 miles down a dirt road towards the end of the park. The road is narrow, but two vehicles can pass slowly. Two trailheads: one for 2 WD vehicles leading to a near 3 mile roundtrip hike or for. 4 WD vehicle only about .65 tenths roundtrip hike. Beautiful hike that has some challenging sections with a fairly decent stretch across the open desert. Great reward at the end.

Day 14 pt. 2: Wanting to find a hiking spot with less crowds, we decided to take an off-roading trial to Tower Arch. Up to this point, we had endured countless “4WD/High Clearance Required” trails. We thought nothing of it until it was too late and we had committed to this long road of technical driving. My girlfriend didn’t last too long as the driver and she demoted myself to spotter, and it was up to me to drive the rest of the way. Luck for me Dan and Denise from Maryland appeared from behind and paired up with us. This seasoned off roading duo assisted the spot and ensured that we made it out. This was my first time driving in this type of technical off-roading. We were in a stock four-wheel-drive Toyota 4-Runner. We made it out with all parts of the car intact. There were a couple times that I thought I might rip the back bumper off because the car was low to the ground, thank goodness everything was okay and we didn’t get stuck.

I still don’t know much about Tower Arch. I did not care to hike it. Still a beautiful view from the dirt road.

BEAUTIFUL! Worth the long drive down a dirt road and the 3.4 mile hike. The trail is a bit more technical and harder to fallow than the more visited places. So be prepared and have fun.

I am not quite sure if Tower Arch got its name from the awesome Egyptian Pyramid like tower you can view from inside the arch looking out, or the grand tower that stands tall on the top of the Tower Arch, or if it is just from grand size (92' x 42' x 50'), but whatever the case maybe it is an arch that is definitely worth checking out. The hike is such a beautiful journey, but one that constantly keeps you on your toes for it requires vigilance in keeping track of Cairns even though you are distracted with the amazing scenery so you can stay on the trail. Reminded me of the vigilance we need to keep our lives on the correct path also.

All the arches are worth making the trip too, this one is no exception. Fun moderately challenging 4x4 trail to a short hike to see the arch. Or an equally exciting, but much longer foot trail from a 2wd accessible dirt road. Cool arch, off the beaten track
